Ottawa Locks and historic setting
At the canal’s northern end, the stepped Ottawa Locks connect the canal to the Ottawa River below Parliament Hill. This compact area links national history, engineering and some of the city’s most recognizable views.
Spring through autumn
Pathways support walking and cycling, while boats and cruises use the waterway during the navigation season. Access points, construction and rental operations vary, so confirm the specific activity before travelling.
Winter skating is never guaranteed
The Rideau Canal Skateway opens only when weather and ice conditions allow. Sections can open, close or change quickly. Check the National Capital Commission on the day of the activity and follow posted safety instructions.
