A useful itinerary is not a rigid minute-by-minute schedule. It is a geographic framework that protects time for weather, queues, meals and unexpected discoveries.
One day: national-capital essentials
Keep the day in the central core. Begin around Parliament and Wellington Street, continue to the Ottawa Locks and Major’s Hill Park, then move into ByWard Market. Choose one museum or gallery that matches your interests rather than attempting several.
Two days: add depth
Use the first day for the central national-capital district. Use the second for a museum cluster, the canal and a neighbourhood such as the Glebe, Hintonburg or New Edinburgh. This prevents both days from feeling like the same downtown walk.
Three days: include the wider region
A third day can support Gatineau, Gatineau Park, a specialist museum outside the core, a rural day trip or more neighbourhood time. Weather and mobility needs should determine whether that day is mostly outdoor or indoor.
Protect the itinerary
- Check timed tickets and security instructions.
- Do not assume every cross-river attraction is a short walk from the previous stop.
- Allow more time in winter clothing, rain or high heat.
- Mark one optional stop that can be dropped without harming the day.
